Chapter 16: پھولی روٹی

"Phooli Roti" (the puffed roti) is a story translated from Hindi, which also appears in the Class 1 Hindi book. Roti is an everyday food, and the idea of it puffing up is a small wonder children can see at home. They follow the story, talk about who makes roti at home and describe how it looks and tastes. The chapter supports listening, sequencing and retelling, and shows that stories travel between languages. It also gives practice with longer text. Children can talk about food they like and about those who cook for them.

This is chapter 16 of 18 in Shahnai, the Class 1 Urdu textbook, and begins on page 100 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "گنتی کا گیت" and is followed by "پیاری تتلی". Its form in the contents is: story (translated from hindi). Transliterated title: Phooli Roti.

In "پھولی روٹی", the aims are fluent reading, clear pronunciation and understanding. Children can be asked to read a few lines aloud, explain what they understood, find new words and use them in a sentence of their own. The book links Urdu with art, environment, science and social science, so discussion can move beyond the text to the child's surroundings. Oral answers come before written ones, and children should not be hurried or discouraged by errors in spelling or script.

Make reading "پھولی روٹی" a shared moment. Take turns reading lines, discuss unfamiliar words and look for them in newspapers or signs. Short, daily practice, with praise for effort, helps the script and the language settle.

This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
