Chapter 18: اچھی چڑیا
"Achchhi Chidiya" (the good bird) is the closing poem of the book. Birds are among the first creatures children notice, and the poem likely praises something gentle and likeable about a bird. Children recite, imitate bird sounds and talk about birds they see, such as sparrows, parrots and crows. The chapter builds vocabulary of birds and actions and supports memory and pronunciation. Children can put out grain and water for birds, observe and describe them. As the final lesson, it is a pleasing end to the first year of reading Urdu.
This is chapter 18 of 18 in Shahnai, the Class 1 Urdu textbook, and begins on page 103 of the printed 2026-27 book. It is the final chapter, following "پیاری تتلی". Its form in the contents is: poem. Transliterated title: Achchhi Chidiya.
Urdu is written right to left in a cursive script, so reading and writing need regular, patient practice. With "اچھی چڑیا", teachers are advised to read the lesson aloud first, let children repeat with correct pronunciation, discuss the meaning of new words and then move to oral and written questions. Writing practice builds from letters to words to sentences. Poems are best learnt with rhythm and recited aloud, and children should be encouraged to love the sound of the language as much as its script.
After "اچھی چڑیا", ask your child to tell you the story or the idea in their own words, and to write one or two neat sentences in Urdu script. Elders can add poems, sayings and stories from their own childhood, which strengthens the connection with the language.
