Chapter 4: People Around Us
"People Around Us" turns children's attention to the people in their lives, such as family, neighbours, helpers and workers, and how they can be shown in art. Children observe faces, clothing, poses and actions, and try drawing or modelling figures. The chapter encourages respect for different people and their work. The book's introduction says there is no pass or fail in arts and that every child's expression is unique, so children are encouraged to depict people in their own way. Looking, drawing and talking about people also supports social awareness and empathy.
This is chapter 4 of 20 in Bansuri, the Class 3 Arts textbook, in the Visual Arts section, and begins on page 30 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Animals in Art" and is followed by "Festivals, Occasions, and Celebrations".
"People Around Us" is meant to be experienced, not just read. Teachers are encouraged to use the resources in the chapter's QR code, invite local artists or take children out to observe and listen. The book asks that periods allotted to arts are not used for other subjects, and that children are never compared with each other. Each child is encouraged to compete only with their own earlier work, and to enjoy the activity.
Where possible, link "People Around Us" to local art and culture: a visit to a performance, a craft in the neighbourhood or a song from a grandparent. These experiences deepen the chapter and show that arts are a living part of community life.
