Chapter 6: House of Hundreds – I

"House of Hundreds - I" is the first of a pair of chapters, which suggests a sustained treatment of larger numbers and place value. A house of hundreds may refer to a chart or grid in which numbers are arranged in rows and columns, which makes patterns visible. Children are likely to read, write, compare and order numbers, to skip count and to see how digits take value from their position. The book's preface urges teachers not to rush to rules, so materials such as bundles and place-value cards are useful. Part II continues the idea later in the book.

This is chapter 6 of 14 in Maths Mela, the Class 3 Mathematics textbook, and begins on page 64 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Fun with Shapes" and is followed by "Raksha Bandhan".

Mathematics in this book is learnt through doing, talking and noticing. For "House of Hundreds – I", children are expected to work with objects first, then pictures, then numbers and symbols, and to explain their thinking aloud. Sections such as Let us Do, Let us Think and Let us Discuss (and, in the early classes, Oral Math Talk, Skill Practice and Math Games) give each idea more than one way in. Wrong answers are useful: they show how the child is thinking and where a new example or material would help.

A good follow-up to "House of Hundreds – I" is to pose a similar question from daily life, at the market, in the kitchen or on the way to school, and let the child think aloud. Draw the situation together if it helps. Short, regular practice is better than one long session, and games are as valuable as exercises.

This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
