Chapter 13 (Part 2, Chapter 6): Dynamics of Population

Chapter 13 (Part 2, Chapter 6 in the printed book). On this site the chapters of both parts are numbered continuously.

"Dynamics of Population" opens the Part 2 chapters of Theme E, at about twenty-four pages. Students are likely to study how population grows and changes, with birth and death rates, migration, age and gender composition and the pressures and opportunities these create, using data, graphs and maps. It links with the Mathematics chapter on data and graphs and with the next chapter on urban landscapes. Reading census data about their own state or district, and discussing what the numbers mean, makes it concrete.

This is chapter 13 (Part 2, Chapter 6) of 15 in Exploring Society: India and Beyond, the Class 8 Social Science textbook, in the Economic Life Around Us section, and begins on page 167 of Part 2 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Citizenship: Rights and Duties" and is followed by "India's Urban Landscape".

In "Dynamics of Population", students develop skills of reading maps and images, working with evidence, comparing places and times and expressing an informed opinion. The five themes of the book combine history, geography, political science and economics, so links should be drawn to other chapters. Group discussion, role-play, short projects and mapping activities suit this chapter, and the text, images and activities can all be used for assessment.

Families can support "Dynamics of Population" by showing interest, helping children collect information and images, visiting local sites where possible and encouraging them to explain what they learnt in their own words.

This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
