Chapter 15 (Part 2, Chapter 8): Cultural Currents: 13th to 17th Centuries
Chapter 15 (Part 2, Chapter 8 in the printed book). On this site the chapters of both parts are numbered continuously.
"Cultural Currents: 13th to 17th Centuries" is the last chapter in the book. The letter to the student in Part 2 explains that it is printed at the end though it belongs to Theme C, Our Cultural Heritage and Knowledge Traditions, because it is intended to be shifted to the Grade 8 Part 1 textbook in future. Students are likely to study the streams of devotion, art, literature, music and thought that flowed through the subcontinent in those centuries. It follows the chapter on architecture and is a long chapter of about thirty-seven pages, followed by a glossary.
This is chapter 15 (Part 2, Chapter 8) of 15 in Exploring Society: India and Beyond, the Class 8 Social Science textbook, in the Our Cultural Heritage and Knowledge Traditions section, and begins on page 215 of Part 2 of the printed 2026-27 book. It is the final chapter, following "India's Urban Landscape".
Social Science in this book starts from the child's own surroundings and moves outwards. With "Cultural Currents: 13th to 17th Centuries", students are invited to observe, question and discuss rather than memorise: maps, images, side boxes and activities are all part of the learning. Open questions encourage them to look for evidence and think about more than one view, and the text keeps to the big ideas so there is time for reflection.
A good follow-up to "Cultural Currents: 13th to 17th Centuries" is to connect it with something local: a place, a person, a custom or a news item. Ask the child to bring one new fact or question to class. Discussing different points of view politely is part of the learning.
