NCERT Solutions for Class 3 Mathematics Chapter 11: Filling and Lifting
"Filling and Lifting" points to the measurement of capacity and weight, two of the measurement strands listed in the preface. Children are likely to compare containers by how much they hold and objects by how heavy they feel, then use simple units or balances to measure. Pouring water or sand between cups and bottles, and comparing weights of everyday objects, are natural activities. Estimating before measuring and explaining the results are encouraged. This is chapter 11 of 14 in Maths Mela, the Class 3 Mathematics textbook, and begins on page 139 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Fun at Class Party!" and is followed by "Give and Take". Several kinds of thinking are exercised in "Filling and Lifting": counting and operating, noticing patterns, estimating, comparing and reasoning about why something is true. The book also develops mathematical language, so children should be invited to describe what they did using the words of the chapter. Teachers can note observations of how children explain their methods and keep them in a learner portfolio, which gives a fuller picture than a single test. At home, link "Filling and Lifting" to real objects: buttons, spoons, fruit, coins, sticks or paper. Ask your child how they found an answer and listen to their explanation before showing any method. If they are stuck, offer another example rather than a rule. This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
