Chapter 11: حروف تہجی
"Huroof-e-Tahajji" is the alphabet chapter, in which children study the letters of Urdu in order. Urdu is written right to left in a cursive script, and letters change shape according to their position in a word, so this chapter is a key reference. Children learn the names and sounds of letters, find them in words and practise writing them. The prelims describe a progression from letters to words, and from pictures and charts to dotted outlines. Short, regular practice and tracing in sand or on paper are far more effective than long sessions.
This is chapter 11 of 18 in Shahnai, the Class 1 Urdu textbook, and begins on page 76 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "میری بلّی" and is followed by "جاڑا آیا". Its form in the contents is: alphabet. Transliterated title: Huroof-e-Tahajji.
Urdu textbooks at this stage share cultural values as well as language, and "حروف تہجی" is an opportunity to do both. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed together, and the teacher's own clear, expressive reading is the most useful model. Short daily practice in tracing letters and copying neat lines helps with the shapes of the script. Families can help by listening to the child read, by sharing poems and stories from their own heritage and by praising effort.
Listen to your child read "حروف تہجی" aloud at home and ask what they understood. Point to words along the line from right to left, and help them trace letters carefully. Reciting poems to family members builds both pronunciation and confidence.
