Chapter 12: جاڑا آیا
"Jaada Aaya" (winter has come) is a poem by Shafiuddin Nayyar about the arrival of winter. It follows the winter story earlier in the book and gives children a seasonal poem to memorise. Children recite, notice the rhymes and talk about how the world changes in winter. The chapter builds vocabulary of weather, clothing and activities, and supports pronunciation and memory. Children can make a winter picture and match words such as sweater, quilt and sunshine with images. Reciting the poem at home for family members builds confidence.
This is chapter 12 of 18 in Shahnai, the Class 1 Urdu textbook, and begins on page 80 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "حروف تہجی" and is followed by "شیر اور مچھر". Its form in the contents is: poem, by Shafiuddin Nayyar. Transliterated title: Jaada Aaya.
Urdu is written right to left in a cursive script, so reading and writing need regular, patient practice. With "جاڑا آیا", teachers are advised to read the lesson aloud first, let children repeat with correct pronunciation, discuss the meaning of new words and then move to oral and written questions. Writing practice builds from letters to words to sentences. Poems are best learnt with rhythm and recited aloud, and children should be encouraged to love the sound of the language as much as its script.
After "جاڑا آیا", ask your child to tell you the story or the idea in their own words, and to write one or two neat sentences in Urdu script. Elders can add poems, sayings and stories from their own childhood, which strengthens the connection with the language.
