Chapter 14: ہنسوں کا جوڑا اور کچھوا
"Hanson Ka Joda Aur Kachhwa" (the pair of swans and the tortoise) is a story that appears to draw on the Panchatantra-style tradition of animal tales. Such stories teach through a tale of friendship and its tests. Children follow the plot, discuss the choices made and think about the lesson. The chapter supports comprehension, sequencing and oral retelling, and adds vocabulary of animals and ponds. It is well suited to acting out with different voices, and children can draw the characters and say what they learnt.
This is chapter 14 of 19 in Shahnai, the Class 2 Urdu textbook, and begins on page 83 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "ہوائی جہاز" and is followed by "پڑوسی". Its form in the contents is: story. Transliterated title: Hanson ka Joda aur Kachhwa.
Urdu textbooks at this stage share cultural values as well as language, and "ہنسوں کا جوڑا اور کچھوا" is an opportunity to do both. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed together, and the teacher's own clear, expressive reading is the most useful model. Short daily practice in tracing letters and copying neat lines helps with the shapes of the script. Families can help by listening to the child read, by sharing poems and stories from their own heritage and by praising effort.
Listen to your child read "ہنسوں کا جوڑا اور کچھوا" aloud at home and ask what they understood. Point to words along the line from right to left, and help them trace letters carefully. Reciting poems to family members builds both pronunciation and confidence.
