Chapter 14: The Surajkund Fair
"The Surajkund Fair" is the last chapter and sets mathematics in a well-known craft fair. A fair offers a rich setting in which several ideas of the year can be brought together: counting and operations with larger numbers, money, measurement and data. The preface says the book recurs to earlier ideas, so this closing chapter probably reuses them in a realistic context. Children read a picture scene, ask and answer questions, and solve multi-step problems. After this chapter the book includes Learning Material Sheets.
This is chapter 14 of 14 in Maths Mela, the Class 3 Mathematics textbook, and begins on page 177 of the printed 2026-27 book. It is the final chapter, following "Time Goes On".
Several kinds of thinking are exercised in "The Surajkund Fair": counting and operating, noticing patterns, estimating, comparing and reasoning about why something is true. The book also develops mathematical language, so children should be invited to describe what they did using the words of the chapter. Teachers can note observations of how children explain their methods and keep them in a learner portfolio, which gives a fuller picture than a single test.
At home, link "The Surajkund Fair" to real objects: buttons, spoons, fruit, coins, sticks or paper. Ask your child how they found an answer and listen to their explanation before showing any method. If they are stuck, offer another example rather than a rule.
