Chapter 10: Making Music

"Making Music" moves from singing towards the way music is built, with children probably exploring beat, rhythm, pitch and simple patterns of sound through clapping, tapping, humming and playing. Making their own simple rhythms or tunes is a likely activity, and everyday objects can serve as instruments. The chapter builds listening skills, memory and a sense of timing, and shows that anyone can create music. Children can compose a short rhythm to accompany part of the Panchatantra story that runs through the book.

This is chapter 10 of 18 in Bansuri, the Class 4 Arts textbook, in the Music section, and begins on page 100 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Sing and Play" and is followed by "Songs and Stories".

"Making Music" is meant to be experienced, not just read. Teachers are encouraged to use the resources in the chapter's QR code, invite local artists or take children out to observe and listen. The book asks that periods allotted to arts are not used for other subjects, and that children are never compared with each other. Each child is encouraged to compete only with their own earlier work, and to enjoy the activity.

Where possible, link "Making Music" to local art and culture: a visit to a performance, a craft in the neighbourhood or a song from a grandparent. These experiences deepen the chapter and show that arts are a living part of community life.

This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
