Chapter 9: Sing and Play
"Sing and Play" opens the Music unit. Children are likely to sing simple songs, play with rhythm and perhaps use body percussion or simple instruments, learning that music is both listening and making. The title promises joy and participation, and it begins the unit's journey from singing to instruments and songs with stories. Group singing builds confidence, listening and cooperation. In keeping with the book's approach, children are not judged on how well they sing, and they may share songs from home in different languages.
This is chapter 9 of 18 in Bansuri, the Class 4 Arts textbook, in the Music section, and begins on page 93 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "Look Around" and is followed by "Making Music".
In "Sing and Play", the process matters more than the product. Children are encouraged to experiment, observe and express in their own way, and the book states that there is no pass or fail in arts at this stage. Activities can be done with simple, locally available materials. Each class can begin with a minute of quiet recall of the previous lesson and end with Circle Time, when children talk freely and the teacher notes observations for future planning.
After "Sing and Play", ask your child to show or teach you something they learnt: a song, a movement, a drawing or a short scene. Watching, listening and appreciating at home encourages the habit of creative practice, which grows over time.
