Chapter 10 (Part 2, Chapter 3): A Journey Through Indian Architecture
Chapter 10 (Part 2, Chapter 3 in the printed book). On this site the chapters of both parts are numbered continuously.
"A Journey Through Indian Architecture" opens Theme C, Our Cultural Heritage and Knowledge Traditions, at about forty pages. Students are likely to explore how India's buildings, such as temples, stupas, forts, mosques, palaces and modern structures, reflect the skills, beliefs and materials of their times and places. Photographs, plans and local examples help. It links with the Arts chapters on heritage and with the Science chapters on materials and forces. A visit to a nearby monument, or sketching a local building, makes it personal.
This is chapter 10 (Part 2, Chapter 3) of 15 in Exploring Society: India and Beyond, the Class 8 Social Science textbook, in the Our Cultural Heritage and Knowledge Traditions section, and begins on page 85 of Part 2 of the printed 2026-27 book. It follows "India's Long Road to Independence" and is followed by "The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society".
In "A Journey Through Indian Architecture", students develop skills of reading maps and images, working with evidence, comparing places and times and expressing an informed opinion. The five themes of the book combine history, geography, political science and economics, so links should be drawn to other chapters. Group discussion, role-play, short projects and mapping activities suit this chapter, and the text, images and activities can all be used for assessment.
Families can support "A Journey Through Indian Architecture" by showing interest, helping children collect information and images, visiting local sites where possible and encouraging them to explain what they learnt in their own words.
This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
