Chapter 1: حمد

"Hamd" is a poem by Hafeez Jalandhari that praises God, and it opens Sitar and the unit Khandaan (family). A hamd is a poem of praise to the Creator, a long-standing form in Urdu poetry, and many families begin gatherings and school days with such verse. Children recite it with proper pronunciation, learn new words and talk about gratitude and goodness. The chapter supports pronunciation, memory and reflection. It introduces children to the devotional side of Urdu literature and to the idea that poetry can express thanks.

This is chapter 1 of 19 in Sitar, the Class 3 Urdu textbook, in Unit 1, خاندان (Family), and begins on page 1 of the printed 2026-27 book. It is the opening chapter and is followed by "آم کی گٹھلی". Its form in the contents is: poem, by Hafeez Jalandhari. Transliterated title: Hamd.

In "حمد", the aims are fluent reading, clear pronunciation and understanding. Children can be asked to read a few lines aloud, explain what they understood, find new words and use them in a sentence of their own. The book links Urdu with art, environment, science and social science, so discussion can move beyond the text to the child's surroundings. Oral answers come before written ones, and children should not be hurried or discouraged by errors in spelling or script.

Make reading "حمد" a shared moment. Take turns reading lines, discuss unfamiliar words and look for them in newspapers or signs. Short, daily practice, with praise for effort, helps the script and the language settle.

This overview is written from the 2026-27 textbook's Contents page, its preface and the chapter title, to help families and teachers prepare. Please read the chapter itself for exact content, activities and exercises.
